Velvet Web has always been more than a clothing label - it’s a legacy, a little slice of Brisbane’s alternative history, and a love letter to every outsider who ever needed a place where they truly belonged.
Our story begins in 1993, when a 21-year-old goth named Bec opened the very first Velvet Web store in a small store on Adelaide St with her mum. The first goth store in Brisbane. Back then, everything was completely handmade - stitched in a basement filled with black lace and Bauhaus posters. They very quickly outgrew the Adelaide St store and moved into a larger store in Queen St Mall.
What started as a tiny dream quickly became a cornerstone of Brisbane’s alternative scene. Velvet Web dressed the club kids, the goths, the punks, and the late-night wanderers of Brisbane’s underground. Bec didn’t just make clothes; she helped shape a community. She helped run the annual Bloodlust Balls amongst many things, events that became legendary in the 90s goth circuit… people still talk about them. Some of the silhouettes that have become standard in goth and alternative clothing were born right here at Velvet Web. Her early work helped define the look that so many brands now recreate in their own way.
Life eventually called her in a different direction. Bec closed her doors in 1999 to start a family, thinking Velvet Web might remain a beautiful memory… but some dreams refuse to fade.
Today, Velvet Web is alive again - revived, reimagined, and now run by three generations of women, each adding their own flavour of individuality and creativity. With the help of Bec’s daughter, Velvet Web has stepped confidently into the digital era, finding new life on social media and online while keeping its handmade, alternative heart beating strong.
Every piece you see here is either handmade from scratch or upcycled with intention - breathing new life into materials, slowing down fashion, and creating something truly one-of-a-kind. We don’t do mass production. We don’t do disposable fashion. We create with purpose, care, and a devotion to sustainability.
